Q: What is this Kinesio tape and how can it help you?

A: Over the last several years we’ve been introduced to the use of what appears to be abstract, colorful, tape art applied to various parts of professional athlete’s bodies. If you are seeing this on the Olympic volleyball players, the NFL draft candidates during the combine, and NBA players around the US this is Kinesio Taping. Kinesio taping, aka “KTaping”, has been around since the 70s believe it or not. Dr. Kase, an American educated Chiropractor, developed this technique. He found the more traditional methods, such as athletic taping and strapping, provided support but restricted or reduced range of motion. He also found these did not support fascia and, in some cases, inhibited the healing process. It is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting range of motion as well as promoting prolonged benefits of manual therapy. The application of KTape is based upon the patient’s needs after evaluation. Kinesio tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, enhance performance, prevent injury and promote good circulation and healing. Clinical application includes, but is not limited to, postural alterations based on musculoskeletal imbalance, sprain/strains of various joints and muscles, complimenting in joint mobility and stabilization therapy, and so much more. I have also seen this utilized to assist someone obtain range of motion and function following a severe acute trauma induced case of drop wrist.
